Brown Dwarf (aka Luke Chen) enjoys sharing good, soulful music from the heart. He is a member of the Groovebuddies collective and has also produced original music under the Fluid
in Motion and AR52 monikers.

Case Woo (Groovebuddies, SG)

From electropop to trip hop, from manic depressive angst to dance culture, the early 90's saw Case releasing industrial electronica under the pseudonym of Censor. Hip2TheHype was a collaborative project which eventually became a precursor to his remixing team Quadmix, Singapore’s first major dance music signing with BMG and Warner/Chappell in the mid 90’s after the release of their first hit “Trick Rider”. Following the success of the breakbeat album "Rocking The 3rd Floor" in 1996. They also went on to win Singapore's COMPASS award for 3 consecutive years. Case’s deephouse and techno productions also caught the attention of vinyl labels Transport Recordings (San Francisco) and Lifetime Music (Berlin) after which followed his solo album “A Deeper Shade” which was hailed by industry maestros as the first deep/tech-house offering from Singapore. Case continued to push his own limits as a producer and that led him to create 3 melancholic downtempo albums with Asian veteran Kit Chan and a concert project with Hong Kong’s veteran and queen of classic pop Sandy Lam. Today, after nearly two decades of pure electronic music and genre experimentation, Case has come one full circle to return to his roots. Synthpop is back once again in the form of a collaboration with veteran DJ Angela Flame with their latest Asian Dynasty release on Beatport “Love Life Dynamite”.

Podo (Robot.net.hk/Smile, SG)

James Chan aka PODO is an integral part in the evolution of techno and electronic music. Previously based in Hong Kong, he managed heavy weight label, Technorient. Consisting of various sub-labels, Technorient has produced works by Technasia, John Thomas, Renato Cohen, Steve Rachmad and Joris Voorn to name only a select few. James has not only assisted in the production and distribution of electronic music but is also an active and involved DJ and producer.

As part of Hong Kong’s Robot Underground crew he has played both DJ sets and live performances with a string of residencies and performances at both clubs and festivals. Most notable perhaps, are his appearances at the Rockit festival and his residency at the perhaps small in size, but larger than life in spirit, club by the name of Yumla. He has frequented trips abroad taking his unique live sets to the greater global community within China’s growing dance scene. This includes Paul Van Dyke’s China tour in 2005 to mention merely one of the many.

Never limiting himself through narrow direction or limited job description, he has been a vital cog in the works of varying different machines. Whether this is a music consultant to the trading and development council of Hong Kong, producing the theme sound for Instyle magazine China or helping start True Colour Club (also based in China), James has never restricted himself in any of his undertakings. Now as managing director of Love Da Music, he will be the first of his kind to bring forward thinking musical concepts to Singapore’s shores.

loopinmotion (HOME/Smile, SG)

loopinmotion is Kelvin Tan. Born in Singapore, he was schooled by the warehouse rave scene of Melbourne and is influenced by the sounds of Detroit Techno.

Never confining himself to simply being a DJ, Kelvin Tan is a weighted player in the industry. Before returning to Singapore, Kelvin worked under The Richard Maher Agency in Australia. Previously based in Melbourne, this agency was the driving force in exposing cutting edge electronic performances to the Austral-Asian region. Now infamous in promoting and representing leading names in the worldwide electronic music arena, the agency is synonymous with names such as Derrick May, DJ Bone, Stacey Pullen, among many others. A multidisciplinary DJ, loop has had more than adequate experience working behind the scenes in every aspect of dance music event management.

After setting his footprints as a DJ and events manager in Australia he moved back to his hometown. Now a true veteran of Singapore's dance scene, loopinmotion has been actively involved in putting on parties since the very beginning. A no-nonsense approach to putting tracks down to the floor, loopinmotion will churn out tracks with both speed and composition. Relentless, uplifting and introspective, he brings both rhythm and strings for both your feet and mind. An experience deep and uncompromising, he is a DJ who uses both experience and technical skill. Currently holding a residency at Home, he is also the man behind operations at the club.

Roy Ng aka DJR, co-owner of HOME, is an experienced mover and shaker of Singaporean dance floors, making waves in the scene since the late eighties. Starting off his career as a mobile disco DJ, he was booked on a weekly basis for exclusive house parties. He made his first Club appearance in 1992 holding a residency at ‘Rascals’ and ‘The Club’ (Pan Pacific, Singapore).

Aside from this, he has played at numerous product launches and fashion parties to celebrities as well as mass audiences all over Asia. These include the launch of Cartier Santos, Louis Vutton, Etro and Piaget to name a few of the brands in Singapore. In Kuala Lumpur he played for the Hugo Boss F1 Party and in Beijing for Tag Heuer, Paul Smith and Ms. Sixty. He was the DJ for the Chivas Party also in Beijing and VSOP at the Commune in The Great Wall. He has also played for The Moet Party as well as Dom Perignon and Belvedere Vodka to name a few. Being an influential player with an unquenchable thirst for dance music he started up his own club in late 2004 by the name HOME. Kai (Smile, SG)

A self professed vinyl junkie for 9 years, Kai is a firm believer that music is the key to the soul. His personal mantra stands that “IF YOU CAN’T HAVE SEX WITH THE MUSIC, THEN YOU CAN’T FEEL THE MUSIC”.

He advocates that whenever a DJ steps into the console, the responsibility is entrusted upon them to deliver a good night and to move every single fibre in the body of the dance floor. This is the level that he is working hard to achieve.

Never one to pigeonhole himself, he embraces various genres of electronic music and aspires to form a musical journey whenever he plays.

Drawing influences from A-list DJs like John Digweed, Sasha, Laurent Garnier and Melbourne DJs like Phil K, Kasey Taylor amongst others, every set that Kai plays will be different but never missing out on the groove and riding bassline.

With recent appearances at Sessions (Phuture) and Sublime (Home Club), Kai will continue to improve and showcase his own interpretation of electronic music to those who will keep an open mind and feel the sounds from the past to the sounds of the future.

Adrian Wee

Adrian Wee became DJing with a simple plan of playing music to keep the dancefloor happy. That was what he did over the years. From successful residencies at various clubs playing house and techno, to conceptualising and promoting parties- most notably Poptart (under the guise wee.like.me), Adrian has always been keen to share the love and vibes with everyone on the dancefloor. His efforts have not gone unnoticed and he has won awards as a DJ and promoter over the years, most recently the inaugural Motorola Superstylemix Music Awards this year where he was voted by the public as 'Best DJ'.

At Smile, Adrian will take you along with him to an excursion into his world of techno, electro and house. A journey you'd never want to end.

DJ Justin

Growing up listening to a healthy dose of 80’s synth-pop and commercial dance, Justin picked up DJing in the beginning of the 90's and spent his formative years in the bedroom honing his technique. Amongst his early musical influences are sub-genres such as Garage/House, Hardcore/Rave, Progressive/Epic, Trance, Techno, and Ambient/Downtempo.

Making his DJ debut in 1998 at Billboards (Melbourne, Australia) while he was there for his studies, he has since completed a short-term residency at Dome Club, as well as various gigs at The Warehouse, Milkbar, Cage, Sirens, and The Bunker Lounge. Coming back to Singapore in 2004, he has since spun in numerous venues and parties including the now-defunct Fuse, Liquid Room, Sound Bar, Tunnel, Sessions @ Phuture (Zouk) and Homeclub.

Equally comfortable playing in an intimate backroom or taking it up a couple of notches in a main room, his sets are intended for taking listeners on an emotive musical journey. Expect layers of kaleidoscopic EDM soundscapes from deep minimal grooves, funky breakbeats, futuristic techy sounds, driving progressive rhythms, nostalgic old skool classics, to more eclectic vibes beyond.

loopinmotion is Kelvin Tan. Born in Singapore, he was schooled by the warehouse rave scene of Melbourne and is influenced by the sounds of Detroit Techno.

Never confining himself to simply being a DJ, Kelvin Tan is a weighted player in the industry. Before returning to Singapore, Kelvin worked under The Richard Maher Agency in Australia. Previously based in Melbourne, this agency was the driving force in exposing cutting edge electronic performances to the Austral-Asian region. Now infamous in promoting and representing leading names in the worldwide electronic music arena, the agency is synonymous with names such as Derrick May, DJ Bone, Stacey Pullen, among many others. A multidisciplinary DJ, loop has had more than adequate experience working behind the scenes in every aspect of dance music event management.

After setting his footprints as a DJ and events manager in Australia he moved back to his hometown. Now a true veteran of Singapore's dance scene, loopinmotion has been actively involved in putting on parties since the very beginning. A no-nonsense approach to putting tracks down to the floor, loopinmotion will churn out tracks with both speed and composition. Relentless, uplifting and introspective, he brings both rhythm and strings for both your feet and mind. An experience deep and uncompromising, he is a DJ who uses both experience and technical skill. Roy Ng aka DJR, co-owner of HOME, is an experienced mover and shaker of Singaporean dance floors, making waves in the scene since the late eighties. Starting off his career as a mobile disco DJ, he was booked on a weekly basis for exclusive house parties. He made his first Club appearance in 1992 holding a residency at ‘Rascals’ and ‘The Club’ (Pan Pacific, Singapore).

Aside from this, he has played at numerous product launches and fashion parties to celebrities as well as mass audiences all over Asia. These include the launch of Cartier Santos, Louis Vutton, Etro and Piaget to name a few of the brands in Singapore. In Kuala Lumpur he played for the Hugo Boss F1 Party and in Beijing for Tag Heuer, Paul Smith and Ms. Sixty. He was the DJ for the Chivas Party also in Beijing and VSOP at the Commune in The Great Wall. He has also played for The Moet Party as well as Dom Perignon and Belvedere Vodka to name a few. Being an influential player with an unquenchable thirst for dance music he started up his own club in late 2004 by the name HOME. a review done by a good mate, wonderful colleague & fellow techno advocate: lock 'n' groove (brad)

At long last a Sm:)e is launched within the heart of Singapore's underground. The silhouette of Singapore's true night grooves play loud into the late part of the night and early morning. Finally soul is brought back to dance floors.

Some may count success in numbers and return in profit. Yes, that is important but for some and it seems to be an increasing few, success was measured in the wideness of the collective smile that was shared on such a forward thinking yet undeniably nostalgic event.

Music, Colours and most importantly emotions flowed through the night as organizers strove to create something with more spine that skin. A stellar line up that night lets get on the way with what physically took place that night. The event and the acts that made it what it was.

The Karl Maka opened. (*Refer to the photos at an earlier post for more imagery than there is in this article). Their unique brand of synth pop always gets an early crowd rocking and tonight was no exception. Songs laden with saccharin synths and sing along vocals meant involvement and enthusiasm by the audience during the entire performance. If this wasn't enough there is always the signature move of Jon Maka bursting into the crowd freeing the mic up over that ever so familiar Depeche Mode song that everyone should know the name of. Anyone? Quite simply sweet and easy to take in, their performance could be compared to a sugar coated pill with much sweeter after effects.

The night had started and as punters tucked into the end of their hour long free flow, Smile resident DJR handed over the transition between synth pop rising up and comers to established international Podo, previously of Technorient HK and now running Love Da Records. A Smile resident of the highest caliber and experience (like all of the three behind this revival) he stepped up with a bag full of tracks spanning from early days of Technasia to secrets of the far reaching sounds of melodic techno and beyond. Not one to back away from a harder sound, he interlaced between seamless mixing into jackhammering tracks that left the few left on the floor in awe of such transitions. It's a shame that most needed a smoke break and so a collection of the floor went outside to enjoy cigarettes and a football game that was currently showing. Nevertheless, Podo continued on strong with a mammoth set, never backing down and pushing his sound forward.

An hour in, a good friend and Smile partner, loopinmotion came to join. A true veteran of the scene it has been none other than his hard work and continual perseverance that has meant an event like this could have taken place. Through both ups and downs he has stayed strong and continues to do so. There is nothing that is telling me his commitment will ever change. Between the seamlessness of Podo's mixing and the breakdowns of loop's now signature echos and delays they brought together a harmony in composition. A new energy came and with it new faces and feet. The two of them were obviously having fun as both smiles and records were exchanged with friendly yet powerful execution. Perhaps everyone had all finished their long awaited cigarettes, I'm not sure but, for whatever the reason, a crowd started to fill as energy and passion flowed through both of these individuals movements and track selection.

Next came and was what many had been waiting for. Deetron, who recently has had an incredible release on Music Man started off with a favourite track of mine 'I'm like a Child', a Carl Craig remix of a Junior boys track. It seems to me and rightly so that everything that Carl touches becomes gold wax, this is one of the latest ones. Deetron himself has currently been on such a mission, with his recent album and the increasingly successful singles that are being released afterwards it seems there is no stopping this spacious and evocative sound. Having said that by space i do not mean minimal so do not be confused, this is full bodied music with plenty of soul. Anyway, I'll stop my pigeon holing, its all House really.

Apologies for the tangent, I will, as was previously intended, go back to Deetron. Technically efficient but not without flare, he moved both quickly and smoothly without compromise. Chopping, layering and doubling up, he is, and I can now say this first hand, a DJs DJ. Impeccable selection with a sensitivity to the crowds needs he also possesses speed and precision while mixing three decks.

No, I can't say it was a full house that night even when Deetron came to take control. Can I ask a question now. In the words of Abe Duque's release, "What Happened?" What happened to the music, what happened to the soul?" I can safely say that is truly one of the goals of this event, to bring back both passion and soul to the dance floor. This is only the beginning. Smile for the future.

Born in Bern, Switzerland, Music was a constant in the Geiser family home. Sam’s father’s activities as a jazz musician ensured that he was surrounded by music from a very early age, sewing the seeds of his own musical interests. But it was Hip-Hop that encouraged this to flourish into an active involvement in music, during his teens. Sam soaked-up the music of Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest, and Prince Paul like a sponge, and was quick to realise the role of the turntable within this context, taking up DJing in 1992.

Early Hip-House producers, such as Todd Terry, also captured his attention, and Sam began to make the transition to more 4/4 orientated sounds – picking up on the now classic output of Chicago and Detroit-based electronic musicians and introducing this into the sets he was, by now, playing around his home town, and further afield in Switzerland.

This led, in 1994, to his first big break – securing a residency at Zurich’s reputed club, Trax at the Rohstofflager. Once reaching this position, Sam felt it was time to make his own forays into music production and began building a studio, drawing on his experience as a DJ to create his own tracks. A meeting with Stefan Reisen, head of the fledgling Phont music, led to the release of Deetron’s first single – as Soulmate, in 1997.

Things snowballed from there. Geiser’s production activity put him on the map, which in turn assisted the growth of his DJ profile. A trip to Japan led to a collaboration with DJ Shufflemaster (again, for Phont), and pretty soon the requests from other labels began to come in. During the late nineties, his work for other labels saw Deetron finding his audience (including a string of International club jocks) and developing his own sound. In later years, Sam’s production touch has graced labels including Cosmic (as Karakter), Ongaku (the ‘Lorraine EP’) and SLS. In addition, he received a deluge of remix requests – resulting in work for Samuel L. Session, Ben Sims, Damon Wild, Steve Bicknell (as Karakter), K-Alexy Shelby, Orlando Voorn, Paul Mac and others.

Possible the most fruitful partnership of his career so far is that with Belgium’s Music Man label. Beginning with the ‘Dolls For a Diva’ 12” in 2001, and including several more 12”s and a superb mix CD that acts as ample testament to Sam’s skills behind the turntables.

Geiser has come a long way in a relatively short period of time, but it’s no fluke ascension given his considerable talent and hard work. What’s more, he shows no sign of flagging. Whilst 2003 has been a very busy year, with extensive worldwide DJ dates, singles for Music Man and Intec, and high profile remixes for Ennio Morricone, Victor Simonelli, Gary Martin, and Mark Broom, 2004 and 2005 have taken his DJ-schedule to yet another level and he released the massive “Miss Suave EP” on Intec in 2004 as well as “The floor jackin’ theory” on Music Man in 2005. Furthermore he remixed Funk D’Void, Joris Voorn, Smith & Selway and Detroit Grand Pubahs to name but a few.

Deetron's debut full length Album“Twisted” released in October 2006 has proved to be his biggest musical achievement to date and can be seen as a milestone in his career. The release gained praise from press and key figures of different genres alike, ranging from Gilles Peterson to Sven Väth, Laurent Garnier, Osunlade and Âme, to name but a few. The first two singles taken from “Twisted” - “Isotope EP” and “The Afterlife” - instantly took off and are still on heavy rotation. Furthermore the success of the Album led to an extensive worldwide DJ-Tour which has taken him to major clubs and events like I love Techno 2006, Berghain (Berlin), Fabric (London), Florida 135 (Fraga), Cocoon (Frankfurt), Rex (Paris).

2007 kicks off with the release of the third single taken from “Twisted”, called “Life Soundtrack” in Spring, which includes re-interpretations from Redshape, Radioslave and Rejected. With upcoming remixes for Legowelt, Shinedoe, Guy Gerber & Gregor Tresher, Bob Sinclar and Voom:Voom as well as an ongoing hectic DJ-Schedule, the new year is looking bright for all things Deetron.

THE KARL MAKA

Jon Maka first saw Ken Maka at a Temasek Poly gig in 1996. Ken Maka was performing on stage and played the bass guitar between his legs. It was then that Jon Maka thought to himself, "Damn, this guy got mad skills!"

As fate would have it, their paths crossed again when they found that both of them were posted to the same unit during national service. Under the fatherly supervison of their CO, Ken and Jon endured many good and bad times together (as most national service experiances, they were mostly bad times).

In 2006, Jon and Ken toyed with the idea of forming a two person electronica/indie group. Inspired by the likes of the Postal Service, the Analog Girl and many others (refer to influences) and a common love for 70s-80s Hong Kong movies by the Hui brothers, Ken and Jon adopted the name of the Karl Maka, in tribute to the legendary actor with bald head in the 'Aces Goes Places' series. The Karl Maka are keeping their fingers crossed that the REAL Mr. Karl Maka does not sue their asses off for whatever legal reasons. In which case they may be forced to adopt the name "the Teddy Robbins".

The Karl Maka are currently working hard in writing more songs and hope to play live shows in as many strange and wonderful venues soon. James Chan aka PODO is an integral part in the evolution of techno and electronic music. Previously based in Hong Kong, he managed heavy weight label, Technorient. Consisting of various sub-labels, Technorient has produced works by Technasia, John Thomas, Renato Cohen, Steve Rachmad and Joris Voorn to name only a select few. James has not only assisted in the production and distribution of electronic music but is also an active and involved DJ and producer.

As part of Hong Kong’s Robot Underground crew he has played both DJ sets and live performances with a string of residencies and performances at both clubs and festivals. Most notable perhaps, are his appearances at the Rockit festival and his residency at the perhaps small in size, but larger than life in spirit, club by the name of Yumla. He has frequented trips abroad taking his unique live sets to the greater global community within China’s growing dance scene. This includes Paul Van Dyke’s China tour in 2005 to mention merely one of the many.

Never limiting himself through narrow direction or limited job description, he has been a vital cog in the works of varying different machines. Whether this is a music consultant to the trading and development council of Hong Kong, producing the theme sound for Instyle magazine China or helping start True Colour Club (also based in China), James has never restricted himself in any of his undertakings. Now as managing director of Love Da Music, he will be the first of his kind to bring forward thinking musical concepts to Singapore’s shores.

The island’s only genuine home to underground music and culture; he has been an integral part behind the decks as well as the running of successful events. Known as lock’n’groove to those who frequent the club’s after-hours event of ‘4am in the mix’ he boasts a love for all things funky. He shares a love for Detroit techno which stems back to his initial obsession with the genre many years ago before ever touching vinyl. He has since grown technically and his obsession has transformed physically now being actively involved with parties while traveling from Asia to Europe, and back again. Currently possessing a much wider palette for sound he aims to draw people in, helping them lose their inhibitions and bringing a sense of soul to dance floors worldwide.

Not one to pigeon hole himself into one specific genre he has collected extensively broadening his horizons way past any specific theme or sound. Notably he has also been a resident at Singapore’s only regular Reggae, Dub and Dancehall event, Rubbadubdub under the moniker of DJ Bud. Asides from this and his regular late night techno sessions at HOME, he has played sets consisting of his growing 45 collection and nu school funk to crowds at Blu Jazz cafÈ as well as a Hip Hop session at the now defunct Bar Bar Black Chic. Venues asides from this that are worth mentioning in his list of growing events include the Liquid Room in Singapore as well as Double 6 in Bali, Indonesia.

He has played alongside rising internationals of the Asian and Australasian region including colleague’s loopinmotion (HOME, Singapore) and DJR (HOME, Singapore), Podo (Robot.Net, HK/ HOME, SG) Norman Chung (SINO, Singapore), Romel Johan (Stream Recordings, Malaysia), Veiga (Stream Recordings, Aus) and Not Happy Jan (Maccanoid, Aus).

review of sublime - a smile preview

The Sound of Smile made a preview at last Saturday’s Sublime. Following the now recent trend of forward thinking events both in Berlin and Cologne, HOME Parties sought to combine a synergy between indie electronic bands and DJs, as the Karl Maka opened for a stellar line up of local talents.

What was also notable of the event was that this was 7/7/07. In 7 other there was a concert that was broadcasted in 7 other countries. We broadcasted it too. Here is a link to some people’s opinion of the festival in Sydney: http://blogs.smh.com.au/newsblog/archives/your_say/014405.html?page=2#comments By signing up as friends of Live Earth, we took on the role of promoting awareness through broadcasting the event on our screens. While not creating a direct solution to the problem, we included the addition of planting our own flowers to be kept at the club. Guests now have Sunflowers and marigolds that are to grow outside the club. Come and see how they grow on your return to the club.

The event, as mentioned, was opened By The Karl Maka, an indie-electronic band with one guitar, midi controllers, a keyboard, ableton and two members played their second set at Home. Their sound is nothing less than unique fusing 80s synth-pop with a more modern twist as well as reinterpreting pop classics like Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode. Interacting closely with the crowd, lead singer Jonathon went into the crowd in the final songs passing his mic around to those who knew the words. A great way to kick off the show, this was only the beginning of a long line of electronic funky beats to satisfy those with eager feets.

Our own DJR took over easing into more 80s classics and synth-driven songs as the night started to make a smooth transition into more dance orientated music. 20 mins of stone floor classics by the likes of Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and The Human League made for a perfect bridge between live instruments and the DJs selection which was to come.

Rafi Dead aka for[e]sight stepped up next pushing a minimal sound that Europe would be proud of. Slowly building up the tempo to a minimal bump in the night bleeping beat, for[e]sight moved soundscapes into a more mathematical and methodical arena. Carefully programming beats to their reduced maximum, he kept the beat grooving to a 4/4 bass that was nothing less than hynotic, and concert had turned distinctly into dancefloor.

Heavy-weights of the night and future Smile residents, loopinmotion and podo, went back to back for two hours going from minimal to the more melodic sounds of Detroit and beyond. Intricate mixing and effective use of the effects unit made this an interesting collaboration of sounds. From tracks simply consisting of the bare minimum of a drum machine to synth-arppegiated arrangements a variety of sounds were covered from both DJs. The more methodical approach of podo’s eq work fitting perfectly with loop’s driving beats and synchronized drops; this was a combination of assured dancefloor destruction.

Moving at high pace as he usually does, xzez came on dishing out classic Detroit beats with a heavy 808 influence. Increasing the pitch at an almost unnatural and neck-breaking pace, strings came seamlessly in above a barrage of four kicks and second beat snares and assorted hi hat rhythms.

Next up came the seamless sewing of tracks with a back2back set by old schoolers, DJ Kai and DJ Justin. Going towards a more techy sound than they usually are known for, they contributed perfect late night grooves for all those left to enjoy. These two are incredibly versatile whatever style of 4/4 dance music they need to produce they always seem to deliver, Saturday night was no exception.

Finishing off this 7 act rotation came Home residents lock’n’groove and DJR, playing a couple of tracks each they built off each other’s styles providing a sound that only two minds working at one could put together. Starting off with deep Detroit tech, they pushed this sound system to it’s max while keeping the remaining few still left moving on the dance floor. Funky as hell with horns screaming left right and centre, not to mention tom toms shuffling, they also provided twisted synths and punchy electro beats.

But the night did not end there, as the record slowly stopped on the platter, beats at 170bpm quickly took over with a drum and bass set by the newest Home resident DJ Ming. Bodies frolicked from in between cracks or perhaps even outside of the club as a new lease of life came to play; we were approaching 6am.

This was a Smile preview, get ready for a new wave movement of music that is meant for dancing to and feeling good, we’re going back to our roots we’re going back to the old school where genre was unimportant. What matter’s is how you feel and indeed it’s our intention to have everyone smiling. So stay tuned for smilingly good dance floor fun.

It's covert...not to be seen, it's not for everyone to put a face on it and market to the masses. Being in a magazine every month, every week ... and being just "entertainment" and not being there for a purpose ... thats not underground. I set the ball up for people sometimes. Sublime has been established since its inauguration in 2003. Since then, Sublime promoters and DJs have continued to spread their events across a number of different venues in Singapore. These include Madmonks, now named and under new management as 'Home Club', the now defunct Centro, Liquid room and the infamous Phuture, which is part of the Zouk complex.

With a sound that is probably best described as 'hi-tech funk', Sublime has the experience, skill and passion to put on and continue putting on successful parties. Although some may be under the false impression that Sublime has been laying dormant, 'HomeClub' has continued to host after hours Sublime parties (4am in the Mix) on a regular basis with great response. As a group, the Sublime team is and has been ready to expand to new venues when possible.

Undoubtedly anyone within the dance scene/community will attest to the collective's experience and continued commitment throughout the years. With a history and group of DJs who have performed for Sublime now having their own music produced on foreign independent labels, the group has grown strong in both skill and determination. The driving force behind the group is Kelvin Tan, executive events coordinator and management at Home Club, but more importantly a respected veteran who has been pushing the scene from the very beginning.

Now in it's eve, Sublime returns with a collection of DJs from differing collectives all over Singapore. From PopMyCherry, 640 West to Frontallabs we bring you a line up diverse enough to cater to any palette of 4/4 quality dance music. One only needs to look at the definitions from various dictionaries and encyclopedias to understand a little bit more about what Sublime is about. It's purpose, intentions and achievements.

On Saturday a collection of the most prominant of Singapore's underground dance scene came together to create something especially... Please choose one of the adjectives in the defintion of sublime.

The night kicked off with Mr. Pink from sweetmusic.fm (my favourite singaporean online radio station [www.dublab.com is my favourite worldwide], although I also have been enjoying unpopular radio, still need to catch liveisevil, I recommend all of these to those who are reading)... Monsieur Rose (that's pink in french but I assume you already know that, I know I didn't) played an amazing selection of obscure old funk and soul (the type you love hearing but can never put the name to) along side Hairspray who went more into the electronic sphere. Ray started off slow, with the likes of classic Warp tunes from veteran signing, Autechre. He started off slow but ended with a collection of pummeling classic techno tracks. From Mills to didgeridoo and polygon window (Aphex), closing off in a beautiful premonition of the harder edged sound that was to come later on in the night.

Next up the two J's came to play a sound that I personally attribute much of todays innovations in todays dance music. Back when Knuckles, Levan and Ron Hardy were first discovering what they could create without the use of generic instruments, playing funk and soul tracks on reel to reels adding a backbone of kicks, snares and hi-hats through cheap drum machines that had been rejected by the established musical industry.

However, it was not until the unique sound of the Roland TB-303 that a real Chicago house sound was born. Sorry I know I've gone on an extremely obtuse tangent but I'm pretty passionate about this machine, the sound and the DJs. Hawtin and Aphex are only part of a newer generation that have recycled this sound, its present everywhere, so I just have to thank Chicago. Thank you. Back to Justin and James, aka Twinhed and Clart. It was the perfect direction, perfect evolution from the two Djs before hand, taking it slightly down but keeping the floor warm, inviting all those who weren't yet on the dancefloor to timidly take part in something that would both grow, accelerate and explode. Kudos to these drum and bass DJs who went beyond there usual spectre of sound to provide something timeless and fresh.

Sue Shan and Feng were next on the roster of this diverse and talented team. Mixing it up by including a cdj on an extra channel while Sue Shan was at the wheels of steel, Feng layored sounds over the top of minimal and electro tracks. Both experienced Djs kept the crowd entertained. Feng scratched samples of vocals, kicks and snares over the top of Sue Shan's impeccable selection of tracks. Both funky and dirty, this was a set for the real freaks who were there for something a bit more sophisticated and different. This team really brought it to the table, we hope you enjoyed and appreciated it. I know I did.

Next was the 'flow'... Ramesh took over the console bringing things down with an amazingly astral yet funky melody, inviting those who had left to come back and enjoy his freeform and jazzy approach to both house and techno. Playing with Ramesh was Norman Chung, a fellow Singaporean with many years of experience under his belt, who has recently had his debut released on SinoHK. Check out Norman Chung at Juno.co.uk for samples. Both Djs played things different and unexpected, yet still accesible and extremely dance friendly. Things heated up as the floor filled in as feet, hearts and minds came out from the hidden cracks where freaks like to hide and not be found, but appear when they so choose.

loopinmotion kept things smoothly on the incline as he brought an array of percussive beats and soulful strings to a brink of uncontrollable pressure and ecstatic tension release. There was something in the air in this set and if you were on the floor, im sure you won't hesitate to agree with me.

Don from Kinemat, an old friend of loops, had a special guest set with loop and lock, (who would come at the end of this tri-rotation). Don came after loop and you could tell there was some added flavour and perhaps even a bit of friendly competition that fueled greater performance, tighter mixing and out-of-the box ambition from both parties.

But lets not forget DJR, the one on the side who was playing the cross fader like it was a musical instrument, chopping and dicing melodies above wax originated beats, truly something to be heard if you haven't already. lock'n'groove added some humour and funk as he started with some screeching 303s and ended with telling the crowd that they better get their 'footwork' on and their booty shaking. By now the loop had been firmly established and the groove was now in place. The party was now peaking.

Taking over with one of my favourite tracks of this year (Carl Craig's remix of Theo Parrish's 'falling up'... for those interested, Technasia has just released another set of remixes for this young yet already classic track), was Cherry and Tyrone Shoelaces. A perfect ending to the night, these minimal DJs brough a tired crowd to their absolute limit, with so many DJs, so many sounds and so much fuel for the floor it was only to be expected that the crowd and completely exhausted themselves by the end of the night.

I have only one last word...

SUBLIME.

seriously, there are those of you into techno either djing or just going out to party. let me tell you my opinion. just keep your trap shut about loving techno.

you know why? because it's not from your heart. it is just something you guys think that the music genre, techno, makes you an elitist. it makes you stand out in the crowd because you are into something more intellectual which the masses wouldn't understand? fuck you. please remember what's the role of a DJ.

when there are no techno nights, i hear complaints that no one bothers etc etc. when there's a techno night and the invitations are sent out, there are either no replies or their grandmother's birthday so happens to be on the day itself.

hey guys and ladies, cut the crap. stop complaining about the money as most of you have day jobs living in a country like singapore, stop complaining about playing to empty dance floor, stop complaining. just stop complaining and do something. Do something very simple like inviting 5 friends for a start to each event.

i am writing this because i am so sick of those out there (you know who you are) who keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps complaining and talking shit. please don't ever come out to me and ask me why there's no techno parties when you won't even turn up when there's one. if you are lonely, there are chatlines for you to call.

it's no wonder our mm said we need stayers not quitters. for once, i agree.

you guys want a scene? come together. talk don't make a scene. actions do.

booked for a gig and just turned up with your gf and your record bag? well, life is not so wonderful.

for whatever reasons it might be, i did not think that i played well during last fri and sat.

i was lost with what i wanted to play and couldn't work the tracks out as i would like it to be.

till 4am in the mix this week, i will do my best even though there might be only 2 ppl on the dancefloor.

sssshhhh..... did you notice the word techno is not as taboo as before? i am noticing more and more writeup, bios and events having techno as a genre listed more frequently.

standing in the middle of a cross junction, i had to make a choice.
looking around, i saw 4 signs.

1 says go left
1 says go right
1 says JUST GO AHEAD
1 says Go back

i chose the path which has the sign saying JUST GO AHEAD. So i slugged the baggage on my shoulders and i will be prepared for the unexpected.

it was seamless......

Case with his wonderful manipulation of Tracktor and what a selection that was.

DJR was on his right with his 2 precious CDJ 1000s, just layering samples & loops working on the DJM 707, complementing Case as if they had worked with each other for years behind the decks.

Me? I was lost without my partner lock'n'groove as he had to take time off to finish work for the club. Big ups! But still, it's impossible to keep me away from my 2 decks and DJM606. Fiddling with the effects, chopping up my beats with Case's and layering the funky hats of the angel and the moody synth sprouting out of Techno Boulevard.

I wish had some pictures of the night. Will make an effort to do it the next time. I was either up in the console or just standing at the back of the room, soaking in the atmosphere, watching how this sound we call techno slowly got people moving and grooving.

Thanks Case and for those who were there with us till it was time to press stop.
